Michelle Bachelet obtained a landslide victory in the 15 December presidential runoff election, something that had been widely expected. Thus she beat her opponent Evelyn Matthei of the ruling Alianza coalition, by 62.2% to 37.8%, the largest presidential election victory margin in Chile’s history. In addition, Bachelet’s Nueva Mayoría coalition also obtained solid majorities in both houses of Congress in the first round election, though not enough for all of the structural changes contained in her government program without negotiating with independents…
